Whitney Vangrin

Whitney Vangrin is living and working in New York and is pleased to announce the opening of 1to1NY, an artist-run project, exhibition, and events space in NYC. Their main concern is contemporary conceptual stances within a social context; an attitude of resistance that is actively pleasurable. They work with film, video, drawings, painting, sculpture, and performance, in tandem with frequent event. She co-founded the space with fellow artists Jarrett Earnest, Leigha Mason and Alex Sloan.

Adan Banuelos submitted a prototype of his latest stool design to the CRUSH Party at Tucson Museum of Art on March 30. He is currently working on a series of 10 in multiple colors and you can view photos on his website at www.AdanBanuelos.com. Jessica Garcia was accepted to Ringling College of Art and Design for Illustration. She won a National Gold Key in The Scholastic Art and Writing competition this past Spring for her Oxbow Final Project animation film.

Emily Birge is a freshman at Johns Hopkins and plans on a double major in History of Art and International Studies with a minor in the Museum and Society Program. School is going really well but she misses Oxbow and having class in the garden.

Glenn Sherwin

Glenn Sherwin is currently on a semester-long National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) trip in Baja California, hiking, sea kayaking & sailing. The only contact with family and friends has been a one-time letter, sent by snail-mail. She reports that the curriculum is simultaneously challenging and inspiring, and the scenery is breathtaking. According to the NOLS instructors, "there are 3 levels of fun. Level one fun is simply easy fun where everything goes your way. Level two fun is when it's still fun, but some crazy stuff happens and it is fun to talk about later. Level three fun is downright bananas and potentially life-threatening." She has experienced all but a full-on-level-three, and is thriving on the challenge in much the same way as her time at Oxbow pushed her to find her potential and live into it!

Megan Landau

Megan Landau is happily working away in the Fashion Design program at Parsons NYC. She's not getting a lot of sleep, but loving it all the same. She mentioned that Oxbow and her experiences here helped her adapt to the Parsons life and shape her design style, love for hard work and passionate art. There are about five other girls from Oxbow's OS19 semester that either go to Parsons or live in New York City. She keeps in contact with the special friends made at Oxbow, friends that she'll always have and love. The accepting and creative energy on the Oxbow campus was infectious and it was the first time she felt like being absorbed by art was not unusual or out of place. Being comfortable as an artist never felt right until Oxbow and she's not sure she would have transferred to Parsons if she hadn't had Oxbow as an experience to support her decision. She wrote to tell us how much our school really does affect people's lives.

Artistically, I learned a lot of new techniques and mediums while here. I had access to much more than before and I made the most of it. I tried everything I could and always talked to my teachers and peers about new ways I could make art. Every so often, I completely stepped out of my comfort zone. Experimenting with technique and testing my artistic boundaries has helped me realize how many paths I have to choose from in the art world and that makes me excited for the future.

The art that goes on in most high schools is usually relatively skill-based. At Oxbow, there is more emphasis on looking and seeing and more critical thinking about what you are doing, the human connection, that personal element. Through art you can begin to understand yourself better. That may be the biggest eye-opener for students. It is almost a preview of college. Get out of the mechanical factory high school education and get into something open, new, and invigorating in a small environment.

At Oxbow, I got to try inquiry-based learning for the first time. This allowed me to control the amount of rigor and the depth of research in my topic, as well as picking a topic that I found most interesting. From going through this new process of learning, I feel excited to go back to the rigor of my sending school to apply the inquiry-based perspective to my classes.
