It is with great sadness that we send news of a loss in the Oxbow alumni family: Jonathan Adkisson, OS29, passed away on July 15, 2016. We will remember JJ for his spirit, humor, and creativity.
JJ was pursuing a BFA in graphic design at CalArts and the Adkisson family has set up a scholarship fund to honor him. The JJ Adkisson Memorial Scholarship Fund at CalArts is a merit based scholarship for exceptional young artists in the graphic design program.
To everyone who joined us for the 3rd Annual Riverside Picnic and Concert on Saturday, June 11 to RAISE THEIR PADDLES in support of The Oxbow School, THANK YOU! The event was once again a wonderful gathering of friends on Oxbow’s stunning campus to enjoy great food and wine, fun live bluegrass music, and we raised over $75,000 in support of deserving Oxbow students. Thanks to the generosity of the community who shares our commitment to student diversity, we are able to provide financial aid and create a school of access for students from a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences.

Holly McVeigh, Oxbow's Admissions Director made it back after a 10 day trip to Patagonia, Argentina.
She took a 5 night pack trip on horseback, cooked meals over an open campfire, participated in group writing exercises, and went swimming in an Alpine Lake on her horse!
The Women's Horse Pack trip was led by Oxbow alum Lulu Watts OS4!

Oxbow Friends - Thank you to so many of you who showed up in support
of both Oxbow and Margrit Mondavi, one of Oxbow's founders on April 16th
at the Robert Mondavi Winery
- it was a spectacular evening in every way; the weather couldn't have
been nicer or the setting more beautiful. The event was sold out with
many family members and long-time friends of Margrit, and a sizable
group of devoted friends of Oxbow; and best of all, thanks to Margrit's
generosity and foresight for collecting many works by visiting artists
to the winery over a 40 year period-all of which were auctioned off that
evening-Oxbow was the recipient of the proceeds from the event. Truly a
win-win for all involved!

Sean Wood's MorningWorks launches later this Spring, a family affair that will feature handmade modern furniture. They donated their first chair to an auction to support the SunRidge School in Sebastopol, CA.
"The frame is White Oak, the seat is hand woven Danish paper cord, and the back is wool felt by Knoll. The wood has a history: we upcycled scrap from a local door maker and shaped and joined it into the shapes you see here - over 80 pieces all told." - visit the SunRidge auction website for more details Sean was Oxbow's former Business Manager and co-taught co-curriculars in biking and kayaking.
Bonnie Levinson was selected for the Selections 2016 Juried Exhibition at The Midway Creative Complex in San Francisco along with 15 other artists. The exhibition organized by ARTSPAN opened January 30 and runs through February 28, 2016.
Levinson is a playwright, theatrical producer, photographer and arts administrator. She served as Oxbow Trustee from 2001-2007 and is currently on the Board of the San Francisco Art Institute and The Gund Gallery at Kenyon College.

Thorson will present recent sculptural works in "Uncanny," a two-person exhibition at Des Lee Gallery at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Uncanny opens February 26, 2016. Watch for more information on the Des Lee Gallery Blog.

Our daughter graduated summa cum laude from NYU with a double major in Studio Art and Art History. She is now working for Calvin Klein. She is contemplating getting a law degree and pursuing a career repatriating art objects. She still keeps in touch with several of her Oxbow classmates and they have regular reunions in Manhattan... I would say that Oxbow was the best semester that any of my four children spent in their cumulative 16 years of high school. Our daughter was the right kid, and for the right kid you do a wonderful job. You changed her life. Thank you.

It's been a whirlwind week, but also a time when I sang the praises of Oxbow to my colleagues. I've been thinking much about how Oxbow is an exemplar of true education. That art centers the curriculum is hardly surprising, and for those of us who work within the traditional educational mold Oxbow offers a gold standard of focused project based learning. Beyond the school's approach to immersive experience are the intangibles which make Oxbow different. The sense of community and of working together, even as each student retained their strong individual presence is palpable. The feeling of warmth and trust between the adults and the nearly adults in the Oxbow community could be felt throughout the campus. The openness of the architecture and interconnectedness of the three studios in themselves speak of the Oxbow philosophy and identity. More than form follows function, the physical attributes of Oxbow have a distinct warmth and invite exploration.
I'm sure that the ongoing challenges of leading and reinventing your school might sometimes keep you from having the time to see Oxbow with the fresh eyes of a visitor, but your steady presence and vision are really visible in every detail. Thank you for inviting me to one of the most profound experiences in my career.
